Keith Urban is gearing up for a big year, and it’s all starting with a brand-new album… and corresponding tour.
On Wednesday (Jan. 17), Urban did a surprise pop-up show in Nashville and revealed that not only is he coming out with his next record, Graffiti U, this year, but he will be heading on tour for the Graffiti U World Tour 2018 in June.
Urban enlisted the help of his fans to make the announcement because when it comes down to it, he is all about working to make his fan base love his music. “That’s what we tour for,” Urban told Billboard ahead of the tour announcement. “If they don’t show up, we’re screwed.”
The tour will be a big event for fans who do attend, because it will not only have Urban as the headliner, but Kelsea Ballerini — who just released her own new record — will be opening most of the dates.
As for the former American Idol judge’s next album, Graffiti U is currently being finalized. It doesn’t have an official release date yet, but Urban is happy with the creative freedom he’s had on this record, so much so, it is shown with the record title. “It’s going in and starting with a blank canvas in the studio that’s just white. I love that unknowingness and that real free expression of artistry,” Urban told Billboard about the “Graffiti” portion of the title.
The “U” portion however has a two-part meaning. It is the first letter of his last name, and it is also an ode to his fans. “We’re in such the ‘I’ generation right now with iPhones and iThis and iThat, and I thought it’d be nice to flip that, and for me remind the audience, the listener, that this is about you,” he said.
